A funny journey from the slowest computers ever to the smartest machines alive.

Your parents waited four minutes for one photograph. You have a machine that answers in one second. This is a book about what you do with that — and why the grown-ups keep saying not now, not that, not so late. For kids, and the grown-ups who lived it.

Ages 8–12 Illustrated 15 short chapters

What it does

Three turns,
in this order.

01

You'll laugh at your parents

Openly, and with evidence. The screeching modem, the four-minute photograph, the floppy disk that held less than a single photo. The joke always lands on the machine — never the person.

02

Then you'll understand them

That turn — from mockery to empathy — is the whole design. A child who has laughed at the old machine is far more willing to hear why the same parent worries about a group chat.

03

Then you'll build something

By the end, the reader knows every app was made by a person — and has made one tiny thing of their own. From only tapping on things, to building them.

Inside the book

The opening.

To get on the internet, the computer had to telephone the internet. On the actual telephone. In your actual house. It sounded like a fax machine being attacked by a seagull, and everybody in the family had to keep quiet while it happened.

One photograph took four minutes to appear. It arrived slowly, in stripes, from the top down — a bit of sky, then a bit of roof, then eventually, four minutes later, you'd find out it was a picture of a dog. And if anybody picked up the phone while it loaded, the whole internet turned off and you started again.

Your parents lived like this. On purpose. For years.

He grew up with the screeching modem and the four-minute photograph, and now advises businesses on adopting AI safely. This book sits exactly in between — a warm, funny bridge between the generation that built the internet and the one that will build whatever comes next.
